The Kentucky Derby is a rite of spring on the annual sports calendar. The “fastest two minutes in sports” has been run every year since 1875, traditionally on the first Saturday in May, by three-year-old thoroughbred horses. Secretariat, the greatest racehorse of all time, owns the event record with 1:59:40, which he famously ran in 1973 winning by two and a half lengths.
The home of the Kentucky Derby is Churchill Downs, a Louisville, Kentucky venue built on rich traditions and legendary guest experiences. It is the world’s most renowned track for thoroughbred racing – the sport of kings. For the Kentucky Derby, Churchill Downs draws the largest crowd for a single-day sporting event in North America, ushering upwards of 170,000 fans through its gates every year, all feeling like royalty at this most special event.
Many seating options are available at Churchill Downs. Guests can enjoy the 1 ¼-mile Run for the Roses from the track’s famous raucous infield, to its grandstands, to the premium seating in the shadows of the venue’s iconic Twin Spires. All seating types deliver treasured, once-in-a-lifetime experiences in crazy hats or stylish fascinators, pastel dresses or seersucker suits, sipping mint juleps or singing “My Old Kentucky Home” during the post parade. No matter your style, it’s the biggest party in sports with celebrity sightings at every turn.
The Kentucky Derby is the first leg of the elusive Triple Crown. The Derby is followed by the Preakness Stakes at Pimlico Race Course in Baltimore, Maryland and the Belmost Stakes at Belmont Park in Elmont, New York. There have been only 13 Triple Crown winners, most recently Justify in 2018.
