Philadelphia Eagles fans are used to success.
With 13 playoff appearances since 2000, who can blame them?
That’s why a 4-11-1 season in 2020 (and seven losses in the final eight games) was enough to cost Doug Pederson his job, even though the coach had led the Eagles to a Super Bowl trophy less than three years earlier.
Enter Nick Sirianni. The 40-year-old former Colts offensive coordinator is now in charge in Philadelphia, and will be tasked with trying to jump-start the league’s 26th-best scoring offense from 2020. Jalen Hurts is the presumptive starting quarterback after the team traded Carson Wentz to Indianapolis in the offseason. Hurts appeared in 15 games as a rookie, going 1-3 in four starts and completing just 52% of his passes.
After no Eagle averaged 50 yards per game receiving a year ago, Philadelphia used its first-round draft pick (No. 10 overall) to add Heisman Trophy winner DeVonta Smith out of Alabama. Smith and Hurts were teammates for two seasons in college, and that chemistry can only help an offense that needs to show significant improvement this fall.
Fletcher Cox and Brandon Graham will once again lead a solid defensive line, and Philly is hoping the talent is there around its Pro Bowl defenders to contend in one of the weakest divisions in football. Washington, last year’s NFC East champion, finished with a losing record, so the Eagles aren’t as far away from getting back to the postseason as it might appear.
The 2021 season kicks off September 12 with a trip to Atlanta, followed by the Eagles’ home opener seven days later vs. the 49ers. Week 3 brings a Monday Night Football visit to Dallas to begin divisional play. October will be difficult, as Philadelphia faces both Super Bowl LV participants. Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs come to Lincoln Financial Field on October 3, and Tom Brady brings his Buccaneers to town 11 days later for a Thursday Night Football showcase game.
Philly has a very late bye (Week 14), and will close the schedule with four straight NFC East games that could make or break the Eagles’ season. The good news? Three of those four contests will take place in Philadelphia, including the regular season finale against the Cowboys on January 9.
